CHILDREN at Hillside Infant School in Northwood have 250 high visibility slap bands to use during October’s Walk to School Month.

House builder Taylor Wimpey donated the bands to encourage the annual national campaign and ensure that children are safe on the walk to and from school.

Head teacher Chris Drake said: “We encourage the children to walk to school, to promote a healthier lifestyle and to reduce traffic outside the school.”

A third of youngsters aged 10 and 11 are classed as overweight or obese, according to figures, yet walking to school is one of the easiest ways for families to increase physical activity.

The initiative promotes the benefits of switching from the car and ensuring less traffic on the roads.

Taylor Wimpey is also offering parents some suggestions on making the walk more fun, including playing I-Spy and having children draw a map of their route.
