HAYES plays host to the next round of the 250London BMX series on Sunday.

Several members of Hayes Hawks BMX Club in Lake Farm Country Park will take part when they stage the fourth round of the series at Dawley Road.

Club rider Jason Daley, of Barnhill Community High School, is leading the series in the Expert Male 15-16 category.

The 15-year-old said: “It started with my Dad because he was racing in the 1980s.

“One day a couple of years ago he took me down to a fun race there and I have just been racing ever since.”

Jason trains up to four times a week and said he gets a lot of support from his family and friends.

“It would be amazing to win,” he said.

“Hopefully I can also get within the top ten in the national series.”

The competition, which started in 2013, aims to provide a platform for novice riders to get a taste of BMX racing and for more experienced riders to continue to participate after the core season is over.

BMX cycling has grown in popularity since debuting as an Olympic sport in 2008.

The 250London BMX series is mostly run by volunteers and is open to all ages, with children as young as four taking part.

Hayes Hawks chairman Scott Dick said: “I love the kids and seeing them do well and grow with the club.

“I think if Jason keeps improving at the rate he has been and works hard, he could go on to bigger and better things.”

Hayes Hawks run club sessions from 10am every Saturday, open to all those who are interested.

Anyone who can ride a bike can do BMX racing and the club supplies the bike, helmet and gloves.

“Hayes Hawks as a club are awesome and provide something really great for kids in the area and further afield,” said Jennifer Johnston, of series sponsors 250London.

“It’s been great getting to know more of the riders, officials and parents and, with every race, we feel like we're becoming very much part of the London BMX family.”

Spectators are welcome on Sunday, June 12. Racing will begin at 12noon, with finals expected at about 3pm.
