Chris Grube is taking a ‘business as usual’ approach to the Semaine Olympique Francaise despite being relieved of Olympic qualification pressure.

The 39-year-old sailor punched his Paris ticket alongside 470 partner Vita Heathcote in March with silver at the World Championships in Mallorca.

The pair missed out on another medal at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia regatta, their most recent event, and are setting their standards routinely high for their next bout in Hyeres.

The French venue is less than two hours away from where the duo will be targeting a podium place in Marseille at the Olympics this summer and they are entering every race with the same steadfast determination.

He said: “It’s down the road from Marseille and every event from here on in counts, we’re pushing hard to make sure we’re at the front end of the event before the Games.

“The milestone of selection is amazing and it’s good to have that done and out of the way now.

“We can focus on the Games but from a racing mentality perspective, it doesn’t change the way I’m going to race.

“We’re there to do a job and focus, it’s business as usual for me.

“Princesa Sofia was a bit frustrating because we didn’t have a medal race at the end.

“We had a couple of really decisive moments where, if we got on the right hand side of it, we’d have got right up there with the lead which is easy to say in hindsight.”

Grube came out of retirement last summer to push for a Paris 2024 spot alongside 22-year-old Heathcote.

The pair’s 'youth and experience' partnership has flourished since in a short cycle as the duo pitch themselves among the best 470 sailors in the world.

With an eye on the 470 European Championships in May, Grube believes this weekend’s event can tee the pair up perfectly in what will be a 'last chance' regatta for some.

He said: “We’ve had three events in a row which have been very close together so we’ve now got the big aim to perform at the next event in Cannes which is the European Championships.

“We still want to go to Hyeres and put down a performance but it’s more about putting ourselves in the best place possible to win the Europeans.

“Vita has done an amazing job, she is doing a great job at the back of the boat in terms of making us one of the quickest on the racecourse.

“She is only 22 and to have the maturity you need to actually make the right decisions and come into a high pressure and high stress environment is not easy.

“She really switches it on for race days as well, which is amazing. It makes my life at the front of the boat decision making much easier.”
