Wasps and England centre Elliot Daly insists his side are in the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s to win it, after laying down a serious marker ahead of the final showcase at Twickenham Stoop.

The 22-year-old was part of a star-studded Wasps line-up that ran riot in the midlands leg of the competition last Friday, running in 120 points in three matches to top Group C.

Now the side are preparing for a trip to Twickenham Stoop this Friday for another scintillating evening of rugby at the Singha 7s finals, and with 163 tries already scored in the competition, Daly is confident the fans can expect more of the same.

And is relishing the prospect of renewing some old rivalries in Wasps’ quarter-final clash with Exeter first up.

“It was really good to get back out at the Ricoh,” he said. “We had a new pitch laid and we had such a good squad out, so the be part of the first Wasps side to run out there this season was awesome.

“It was such a good result so we couldn’t have been happier. I think when Dai announced the squad for the Singha 7s everyone realised that we are really pushing to win this competition, and it was really good fun.

“We’re all keen to put down another performance this Friday and see how far we get. We’re going to have some tough games obviously, with Exeter first up and then Newcastle Falcons or Scarlets after that if we get through.

“I actually went to school with one of the Exeter lads, Adam Worth. It makes me feel very old as he is a bit younger than me, but he is a very good player, and there’s a few others we have an eye on too.

“But every squad if they have made it through the group stage are going to be a strong side and a tough ask.”

There were 163 tries in the group stages and the excitement is set to continue in Friday’s final round as Harlequins, Wasps, Gloucester Rugby, Exeter Chiefs, Newcastle Falcons, Sale Sharks, Scarlets and Newport Gwent Dragons battling it out for the first silverware of the club season.

With an astonishing seven tries Christian Wade was the star performer in a strong Wasps line-up that also included Alex Lozowski and skipper Guy Thompson, while new-boy Brendan Macken also impressed with three scores of his own on the night.

And while Daly admits he is determined to trouble the scorers a little more at Twickenham Stoop than he did at the Ricoh, he is enjoying taking the lead of the young Wasps side on the pitch.

He added: “Even though I’m not that old, the last couple of years at Wasps I feel like I’ve grown into more of a senior player, and I’m enjoying having more of a senior role in this team.

“We had two academy lads out with us at the weekend; they really wanted to be involved and it’s great that the Singha 7s gives them that opportunity.

“Then you have someone like Christian in the team as well, and he will be massive for us. Everyone saw it last week, he’s been there and done it all in 7s and it really shows.

“He got seven tries and I got none, so that’s definitely something I’ll be looking to put right on Friday!

“The atmosphere will be massive. Anything round Twickenham near the World Cup is going to be big, and I’m sure there will be a huge crowd. Hopefully they’ll get behind us.”
