He may not be a household name in the UK, but Belgium’s Iljo Keisse is certainly top dog on the Six Day circuit, and he admits he cannot wait to strut his stuff in London.

The 32-year-old currently has 25 professional Six Day victories to his name – including five titles in Ghent, as well as at Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Zurich, Copenhagen, Munich and Stuttgart – making him the most successful rider currently in the format.

Since his professional debut ten years ago, Madison specialist Keisse has gone from strength to strength in the sport thanks to mixing a full season of road racing with a winter of Six Day rides.

And with his track debut on these shores fast approaching, Keisse is hopeful that Six Day London can be a big part of the resurgence of the format.

“I’m really looking to coming over to London,” he said. “It’s very good for Six day racing that it is coming back to London, and I hope I can give the Six Day scene a big boost as it has suffered in the last ten years or so.

“I’m sure it will be a fantastic event with a lot of spectators, and I hope a fresh start for the Six Days."

“Track cycling is very popular in Great Britain, and normally the Six Days offer everything that track cycling does and more. It’s a wonderful mix of sport and spectacle."

“Of course the main part of the programme is the racing and that is most important, but you can also expect entertainment if you come to a Six Day race."

“It is still a sport and the best have to win, but the riders are also looking to make a spectacle so expect to see a lot of tight, exciting racing which will keep the attention of the crowd.”

Keisse’s last Six Day win was at the 2014 Rotterdam Six Day with Dutch winner of Paris-Roubaix, Niki Terpstra – whom he could be partnered up with again in London.

And after a stellar road season that saw him claim his first ever Grand Tour stage victory at the Giro d'Italia, he is more confident than ever that he can deliver the goods once again for the London crowd.

He said: “My shape is really good at the moment. I had my best year on the road ever, and while the season is nearly finished now it is always good for me to make the switch back to the track."

“When I’m tired of the road, which is always about now, then I really look forward to getting on the boards!

“For me it’s a good way to keep in shape all year. I am a little bit older and I need to keep going through the winter to be good in the summer too. Some people think it’s too much but for me it works."

“I won’t actually be racing that much this winter – only in London and my home race in Ghent. You want to win everywhere you go, so it would of course be really nice to win in London."

“I hope it goes on for many years as this is just the start. I am still young – only 32 – so I still have some time left but it would be really nice at the end of my career if I can say I won here."

“But first I need to get there in good shape and then we will see.”
