Double Olympic champion Geraint Thomas believes gold in Rio would be the perfect end to Sir Bradley Wiggins’ illustrious career.

With seven Olympic medals to his name already – including four golds – and a Tour de France title to boot, Wiggins is arguably the country’s most iconic cyclist.

After spending plenty of time on the road Wiggins has now set his attentions firmly on the boards and further track titles at Rio 2016.

And Thomas thinks success for the 35-year-old would be a fitting way to say goodbye to a legend of the sport.

“Brad’s obviously gone back to the track now and he’ll want to win and he’ll be determined as ever,” said Thomas.

“I’m sure he’ll commit to that and fight for his place with the other boys. Hopefully they’ll deliver in Rio."

“There’s two Brads really, there’s the confident, joking Brad and then the quiet, comes down to dinner with his hat on and then goes away. When he’s in good form and confident, he’s good to be around."

“Brad started on the track so to close his career on the track as well is a fitting end as well. If they go to Rio and they end up winning, there will be no better way to hang up his wheels.”

For Thomas – who is a two-time Olympic and triple World champion in the team pursuit – it is also all eyes on Rio, but this time the tarmac will be home as he looks to make an impact in the road race.

But before then he will head back to the capital for the first time since London 2012 for this weekend’s Revolution Series.

Thomas won one of 12 medals at London 2012 – eight of which were gold – but while a return to the Lee Valley VeloPark will stir up happy memories, it is also a reminder that the bar is set very high for Rio.

And Thomas admits that Wiggins and co certainly have a fight on their hands if they are to repeat the feat next summer.

“I’m really looking forward to taking part in the Revolution Series,” Thomas added. “It’s the first time I would have done it since before the London 2012 Olympics."

“It does help turn attention to Rio, but you can’t stay at the top, winning everything all the time."

“Since 2007, where I think we won about six or seven golds at the Track World Champs and then Beijing 2008 was amazing, Manchester Worlds in 2012 was amazing and then obviously London."

“You can’t keep doing that. But hopefully they will start turning it around now this winter and they’ll come out firing. I’ve got all confidence they will perform in Rio.”
